When people think of chains, all they can imagine are oblong-shaped pieces of metal linked together to look like a metal rope. This is, more or less, an accurate visual description of what a chain is, but it’s hardly comprehensive or insightful.
Chains are much more complicated than a simple link of metal rings; their design has kept adapting to suit the needs of the people who use them. For example, the problem of the “weak link” has been dogging the chain making practice for centuries, until industry professionals began looking for solutions to get rid of it.
The fruits of those design alterations are the different chain types that are prevalent in several industries, making them a significant part of steel supply lines online companies provide. Each type has its strengths, and its best for people to know what those are if they have projects that have need of a strong steel rope. The two most common chains are the rolo chain, and the twisted link chain.
The rolo chain is probably the most recognizable type of chain, though much smaller. The chain is a sequence of symmetrical round links of identical sizes. This design isn’t the strongest, as it only affords two stress points to carry all the weight of the links.
A sharp tug of power is usually enough to snap a Rolo chain, depending on their size. Jewelry designers prefer using the Rolo chain for necklaces and pendants, as the simple design doesn’t take attention away from the gemstone.
A variance of the rolo chain is the twisted link chain. Their links are slightly oblong-shaped with the ends twisted at an angle for both style and strength. People can usually see examples of these chains attached to wallets.
These chains don’t have a specific purpose apart from being ornamental, but these are still stronger than the rolo. Notice the two ends where each link meets is slightly thicker: this is a side effect of the twisting process that also allows each link to carry more stress.
